| I do not think it matters whether or not somebody speaks English, especially in Quebec, but rather if that someone speaks well both languages. You should always learn extensively your first language first and then go on and learn another, that it be English or any other language.
I've always thought that it is somehow a good thing to develop new abilities and speaking another language is no exception (I say somehow because it always depends on the abilities one develops). However, I also have to say that English, although it is the lingua franca, is not the only language and other languages should be learned as well, because English brings a lot of laziness to those who speak it and they often tend to be refractory on learning another language as they think that once it is learned, it is the key to everything. That's a very improper as a whole IMHO. |

I agree with you that we should learn as many languages as possible. This means not only english but others too. But always remeber that Québec is the homeland of french america. It is the homeland of a unique PEOPLE. And I believe in cultural diversity. So this is why I think that Québec must be a french country : to preserve and share our unique language ... and therfore culture. |

| | That's why I emphasize on learning extensively his/her mother tongue first and foremost. Well, I live close to Trois-Rivières and I am a francophone native, so it implies that I clearly know the ramifications of my doings and those of others who are not familiar with Quebec's culture, that they be in Canada or elsewhere in the world. |

I don't get it. Who's mother tongue do you mean?

"Criss, on parle franças ici."

_________________

| I'd rather have my children to be tought german at school than bloody english. English grammar is easy as arse and its vocabulary comes mainly from french. Whereas german is a tabarnacking language, comparable to french, complicated by 4 levels of declination and three genders. It's a learn it early or forget about it language.
And I personally like this english enfilade. Could be a good place to promote and debatte ideas that could easily be understood by friendly visitors and federalist tossers. |
